People are encouraged to take the daily 2p pill for important health reasons, including its proven effects in preventing dementia. As summer approaches and the weather starts to change to less hot, the NHS is recommending that people start taking vitamin D supplements.

It’s not just the elderly who can benefit from this supplement – children as young as eight can also reap the benefits, with claims that it can boost bone strength and significantly reduce the risk of dementia. Cheap vitamin D tablets are recommended by doctors, especially in those parts of the year when sunlight, which is the source of vitamin D, is lacking.

Vitamin D supplements are very cost-effective – with 400 tablets available for less than £8 online, the equivalent of less than 2p a day – and researchers have recommended it as a good source. Vitamin D is also linked to a reduced risk of dementia, and the NHS also recommends these supplements.

A study conducted in France found that people with vitamin D levels below 50 nmol/L were three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. The government advises everyone to consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter months.

Those at high risk of vitamin D deficiency, all children between the ages of 1 and 4, and infants (unless they drink more than 500ml of infant formula per day) should consider a daily supplement day throughout the year.

The famous Dr. Michael Mosley, who tragically passed away earlier this year, was a proponent of vitamin D supplements. He explained his dosage plan by saying: “I take 25 mcg (1,000 IU), which is within the limits of what is considered safe (anything below 100 mcg per day for adults or 50 mcg for children, according to the NHS) but close. according to the kind of research that shows you need to take it to prevent infections, cancer, and possibly dementia.”

Meanwhile, Dr Jenny Goodman, associated with the British Society of Ecological Medicine, shared her unique way of taking vitamin D: “I go outside with my legs and upper arms exposed in the summer , which, I found, gives me enough vitamin D to last until December (it’s fat soluble so it can be stored).

Dr Lavan Baskaran, a GP who specializes in ADHD, is convinced that everyone aged eight and above should try his treatment. “Unless I’m on summer vacation, I take 1,000 IU every day. If I forget, I’ll feel low, anxious and tired with painful joints.”

Research involving mice has highlighted the ability of a diet rich in vitamin D to enhance the body’s resistance to cancer and enhance immunotherapy responses. Caetano Reis e Sousa, who leads the Immunobiology Laboratory at the Francis Crick Institute and is the senior author of the study, said: “What we showed here was surprising that vitamin D can regulate the gut microbiome in favor of the type of A bacterium that provides energy. Mice protect themselves against cancer.”

He added, “This could be important one day for cancer treatment in humans, but we don’t know why vitamin D has this effect on the microbiome. It has and benefits for the prevention or treatment of cancer.”
